The 5 Common Types of Water ProblemsThere are five common types of water problems. They are defined as Hard Water, Iron Stains, Taste and Odour, Acid Water and Turbidity. We can solve them all.
Hard WaterHard water is caused by water passing through rock formations and picking up calcium and magnesium on the way. Hard Water minerals create bathtub rings and form a scum that appears on shower walls, clings to your hair, clogs pipes and your skin's pores. Water heaters will operate inefficiently, appliances will have have higher maintenance costs. Hard Water will also make it very difficult to keep the house clean.
Iron StainsIron will stain your sink and clothes, form scales in pipes and appliances, as well as taste and smell aweful. Water with iron can appear either clear or red depending on whether the iron has oxidized. Iron problems are caused by water passing through iron-bearing strata in the earth. It can also be caused by water standing in iron pipes. There are three types of iron that cause problems in the home: Clear Water Iron: Water is clear when drawn then turns red after standing for a time as the iron mixes with the air and oxidizes. Red Water Iron: Water is red when drawn as the iron has already oxidized in the ground, well or water system. Bacterial Iron: Water has slimy rust or yellowish globs because of bacteria in the water that feeds on iron. The bacteria is not harmful but can clog up your plumbing.
Taste and OdourTastes & Odours in your water is no laughing matter. Decaying organic material, chlorine, dissolved gasses or minerals can all cause your water to taste and smell bad. Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) is caused by rotting vegetation or oil deposits underground. Luckily, most minor problems are easy to treat.
Acidic WaterAcidic Water cannot be detected by the water's appearance, feel or odor. Acidic water can cause blue-green stains on plumbing fixtures and eat away at chrome faucets, fittings and pipes. It can etch china and glassware and corrode expensive parts in your appliances. Acidic water problems are caused by water passing through rock such as granite or marble. The only way to determine the acidity level is with a PH test.
Turbid WaterTurbidity is caused by suspended materials in water and can be seen visually. Turbid water clogs small water-bearing openings and also causes wear on valves, seats and washers. These materials can get in to your water supply a number of ways.
