	Color Signs of Water Problems
1) Orange rust like stains - Sure evidence of iron, iron will stain toilets, laundry and fixtures at 0.3 part per million.
2) Black stains and black flecks in laundry - sign of manganese. Manganese will stain in very small amounts - 0.05 parts per million.
3) White scale on shower stalls, inside dishwashers, low suds yield and high soap use are common signs of hard water. Hard water is a general term used to describe calcium and magnesium. These two minerals are commonly found in limestone, gypsum and are very common throughout Nova Scotia. Hardness is measured in grains per gallon and parts per million. One grain per gallon equals 17.1 parts per million.
4) Green Stains - Common sign of acidic water - low pH. Acidic water is actually dissolving copper piping in the house and leaving a green residue in sinks, toilets and showers. A home with low pH also wears seals on tap fixtures quite often - they start leaking.
5) Other Problems - Smell of rotten eggs - Hydrogen sulfide or sulfur. Sand, silt and particles in water. Bacteria and other living organisms. Dissolved solids covering a wide range of minerals: arsenic, copper, lead, mercury, and salt to name a few. Organic matter acid tannins.
